Frederick J. Mpanga

Frederick J. Mpanga is Head of Intellectual Property at AF Mpanga, focusing on Intellectual Property Law. He specialises in intellectual property registrations and litigation, real estate conveyancing, banking law and practice, international trade and securitisation, with expertise extending to insurance, finance, and local and international arbitration.

Frederick is regionally and globally renowned for his excellence in the IP space. He has for many years provided advisory services to Coca-Cola (trading as Century Bottling Limited in Uganda) regarding product certification, branding and passing off actions from other traders in the Ugandan market.

He appeared before the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament in a special session on the Copyright and Neighboring Rights Bill (eventually passed as the Copyright and Neighboring Rights Act, 2006), and was part of a panel of experts set up by the Uganda Law Society to critique and propose amendments to the Trademarks Bill, eventually enacted as the Trademarks Act, 2010.

He holds an LLB (Hons) from Makerere University and an LLM from the University of Cambridge, and is a lecturer of law at Makerere University. World Trademark Review 1000 (2021) notes that he oversees trademark registration and litigation matters with poise and describes him as an accomplished filer and litigator and a respected lecturer on all things IP.
