Mathias V. Ssekatawa

Mathias Victor Ssekatawa is a Partner at MMAKS Advocates, specialising in Intellectual Property Law, with extensive experience in trademark filings, renewals, assignments, anti-counterfeiting, and intellectual property litigation. He also advises on conveyancing, criminal law, and general litigation matters.

He has acted for major international clients including Marvel Characters, Inc., NBA Properties Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Chevron Corporation, Colgate Palmolive, Beiersdorf AG, Weetabix Ltd, Nintendo Co. Ltd, DC Comics Inc., Liberty Group Limited, and Monster Energy Company in trademark opposition, infringement, passing off, and cancellation matters. He also acts as retained external counsel for the Uganda National Bureau of Standards and the Uganda National Examinations Board.

He holds an LL.M (Corporate and Commercial Law) from the University of London, an LL.B (Hons) from Makerere University, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre, Uganda. He is a member of the Uganda Law Society, the East African Law Society, and the International Trademarks Association (INTA), where he has been appointed onto the Anti‑Counterfeiting sub‑committee. He chaired the Uganda Law Society committee that advised on the revision of trademark law in Uganda, leading to the New Trademarks Act of 2010, and has been appointed a board member of Uganda's National Examinations Board (UNEB).
