Hussein D. Gulam, FCIArb

Hussein D. Gulam, FCIArb is a Legal Associate at MMAKS Advocates, specialising in arbitration and mediation. He is a dual‑qualified lawyer licensed in Uganda and New York, and represents clients in all forms of corporate and commercial litigation and arbitration, with a particular focus on commercial and investment treaty arbitration, international dispute resolution, and conflict of laws.

He has acted for the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa Ltd in a string of post‑arbitral proceedings relating to the recognition and enforcement in Uganda of a $156 million New York Convention Award against AYA Investments (U) Ltd, and for Canaf Group Inc., a Canadian listed mining firm, in proceedings for the setting aside of an arbitral award against the Government of Uganda. He has also acted for the Central Bank of Uganda in defence of a $3 million breach of statutory duty claim, for the German Development Agency (GIZ) in defence of a breach of contract claim, and for the United Nations Federal Credit Union in various loan recovery actions. He has been part of a team acting in a class action lawsuit on behalf of over 1,236 claimants against the Government of Uganda for the recovery of unpaid terminal benefits arising from the restructuring of the Uganda National Roads Authority.

Hussein holds an LL.M in International Litigation and Arbitration from New York University (Hauser Global Scholar), an LL.B from Makerere University, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre, Uganda. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb) and an Expert on Lexis Nexis' Panel of Arbitration Experts. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association, the Uganda Law Society, and the East African Law Society.
