Derrick K. Kizito, MCIARB

Derrick K. Kizito, MCIArb is a Legal Associate in the Disputes Resolution Team at MMAKS Advocates, specialising in arbitration and mediation. He is a U.S. and Uganda‑trained disputes resolution lawyer, representing clients before international arbitral tribunals and the Courts of Uganda in complex, high‑stakes disputes across construction, intellectual property, technology, finance, mining, and energy sectors.

He has represented a consortium of oil majors in a UNCITRAL arbitration seated in Geneva in a multibillion‑dollar cost recovery claim, advised a leading oil company on a prospective USD 190 million treaty claim, and acted for a Scandinavian state and an investor in ICSID arbitrations. He also acted for a Canadian listed mining company in a USD 13 million claim against a government agency, a Saudi‑based construction company in a London‑seated ICC arbitration, and a South African subsidiary of a leading American chain store in a USD 22 million UNCITRAL arbitration. He has successfully defended a South African company in an application for a temporary injunction pending constitution of the arbitral tribunal and represented a government parastatal in an application to set aside an arbitral award on public policy grounds. In commercial litigation, he has represented a Danish energy consortium in a USD 11 million suit against a leading insurance company and acted for the Central Bank of Uganda in a suit involving USD 11 million and UGX 250 billion.

Derrick holds an LL.M in International Business Regulation, Litigation and Arbitration from New York University (NYU), where he was a Dean's Merit Scholar, a First‑Class Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre (where he received the Chief Justice Award as the best graduating student on the Bar Course), and a Second Upper Class LL.B from Makerere University. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (MCIArb), a member of Young ICCA, the Africa Arbitration Academy, and LCIA YIAG. He is an Advocate of the High Court of Uganda and a member of the Uganda Law Society and the East African Law Society.
