Kiryowa Kiwanuka

Kiryowa Kiwanuka, widely known as "KK", is a Founding Partner of K&K Advocates and one of the most prominent litigators and commercial lawyers in the East African region. With over two and a half decades of active practice, his primary practice area is Arbitration and Mediation.

His litigation practice spans commercial and civil disputes, banking and finance, insolvency, and energy law. He has appeared at and led disputes at the highest levels of the East African judicial system and international arbitral tribunals, advising financial institutions, corporates, energy operators and public bodies on matters requiring sophisticated legal strategy, regulatory navigation and multi-party stakeholder management. His practice is distinguished by a rigorous analytical approach and a sustained record of results in high-value, precedent-setting matters.

His energy and infrastructure practice encompasses upstream and downstream petroleum law, regulatory engagement and project advisory work. He served as a director on the inaugural Board of the Petroleum Authority of Uganda, a role that placed him at the centre of shaping Uganda's oil and gas regulatory regime.

He is currently on sabbatical from the firm while undertaking public service. He served as Attorney General from 2021–2026 and is currently serving as Minister for Defence.

He holds an LL.M in Petroleum Law and Policy from the University of Dundee, a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre, and an LL.B (Hons) from Makerere University. His areas of expertise include commercial arbitration and litigation, oil and gas and energy law, banking and finance, and insolvency and restructuring. He is a member of the Uganda Law Society.
