Ernest S. Kaggwa

Ernest Sembatya Kaggwa is a Partner in the Litigation team with over 20 years of experience specialising in commercial litigation, arbitration, debt recovery, and employment law. He handles general commercial litigation and arbitration, with a particular focus on corporate debt recovery for banks and corporate entities, as well as employment disputes.

He has acted in international arbitration proceedings, including a dispute involving a concessionaire and the Government of Uganda at the LCIA, and an arbitration involving Italian road construction supervision companies and a UK‑registered recruiter. He has handled significant debt recovery mandates for banks, including a US$ 100 million recovery against a local investor, a US$ 7 million recovery against a flower growing and exporting company, and a US$ 4 million recovery involving suits in both the Land Division and Commercial Division of the High Court. He also advises on employment disputes and has acted for the Central Bank in a pension dispute involving former employees.

Ernest holds an LL.B (Hons) from Makerere University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre, Uganda. He completed a secondment to the corporate and commercial department and international arbitration department of Stephenson Harwood in London, and also participated in a secondment at Essex Court Chambers, a leading barristers' set in London. He is an Advocate of the High Court of Uganda and a member of the Uganda Law Society and the East African Law Society.
