Peter C.R. Kabatsi

Peter C.R. Kabatsi is a Senior Partner at Kampala Associated Advocates, where he jointly heads the Litigation Department. He is a distinguished legal practitioner with over 50 years of experience, specialising in dispute resolution, commercial litigation, arbitration, banking and finance, and constitutional and public law. He has represented local and international clients across diverse sectors, including oil and gas, telecommunications, public bodies, and government agencies.

He has served as Uganda's Solicitor General (1990‑2002), where he supervised the drafting of all new laws during his tenure, including the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, the Companies Act, the Contract Act, the Copyright Act, the Electronic Media Act, and the Financial Institutions Act. He also served as Director of Public Prosecutions (1986‑1990) and as Principal Crown Counsel in the Kingdom of Lesotho. He is an ad hoc Judge of the Permanent Court of Arbitration and is on the List of Counsel eligible to practice before the International Criminal Court. He served as President of the United Nations International Law Commission (2001‑2002), Vice President (1996‑1997), and General Rapporteur (1994‑1995). He has also served as legal expert on various OAU and UN committees, including drafting the Bamako Convention on Trans‑Boundary Movement of Toxic Wastes and Hazardous Substances.

Peter holds an LL.B from Makerere University and a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre. He is a member of the Uganda Law Society and the East African Law Society. He serves as Chairman of Bank of India Uganda Limited and Liberty General Insurance Limited‑Uganda, and has served on numerous boards and committees, including the Makerere University Appointments Committee and the Uganda Privatisation and Reform of Public Enterprises Committee.
