Yusuf B. Kanyike

Yusuf B. Kanyike is a Principal Associate serving in dual capacities in the Corporate & Commercial and Litigation practices, focusing on Immigration Law. He has 17 years’ experience in legal practice specialising in immigration law.

In this area, his work covers all aspects of entry clearance applications for entrepreneurs, investors and business representatives. He also advises Uganda-based employers seeking to recruit expatriate staff.

In terms of litigation, Yusuf has participated in a number of complex, high-value cases and has a wide range of experience in commercial litigation and arbitration. He has successfully handled numerous commercial and conveyance disputes on behalf of several of the largest telecom and technology companies in Uganda, including advising clients on potential disputes and developing strategies to avoid or successfully settle disputes at an early stage.

He advises domestic and foreign clients on various aspects of the commercial and labour laws of Uganda, alongside company secretarial services, advisory services and policy reviews. His clients include multinational corporations and medium-sized private companies in the healthcare, information technology, manufacturing, construction and engineering, and telecommunication industries.

His sample transactions include advising on the establishment of Warid Telecom (U) Ltd, one of the largest telecommunications companies in Uganda, subsequently acquired by Airtel Uganda; advising National Water and Sewerage Corporation on a multimillion-dollar project with a consortium comprising OTV France, Cementers Uganda and Roko Uganda for the construction and operation of the Nakivubo Waste Water Treatment Plant; and advising on one of the largest investments in Uganda’s health sector when Fortis acquired a majority stake in International Medical Group Ltd.

He advises several airlines, including Qatar Airways, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Turkish Airlines, on numerous legal and regulatory requirements, and has advised and represented clients including National Housing and Construction Corporation, Spencon Services Limited, Huawei Technologies (U) Ltd, Airtel (U) Ltd, ATC (U) Ltd and International Hospital Kampala Ltd. He holds an LLM with Distinction and an LLB with Honours from Makerere University, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Center, where he ranked in the top 5% of his class.
